Weapons Safety

Weapons Safety

There is no obligation for members to take part in sparring or fencing but practitioners have this option. They must first demonstrate foundational weapons knowledge and should be able to maintain a certain amount of control. Practitioners should not participate if they have any injuries or health conditions, which could be exacerbated.

Sparring should only ever be conducted under the supervision of an instructor and with a First Aider present.

Equipment must be in good condition i.e. no rusted blades, or splintered staves. Protective clothing must also be worn. Below are the minimum requirements:

1) Minimum requirements for form weapons sparring:

Fencing mask / eye protection.

2) Minimum requirements for synthetic, plastic and rattan weapons sparring:

350N Fencing mask, protective gloves, torso protection, elbow and forearm guards, knee and shin guards and groin guard.

3) Minimum requirements for blunt metal sword sparring:

350N Fencing mask, 350N mask cover, heavy duty protective gloves, 350N shorts, 350N skirt, 350N sparring jacket / hoodie, torso protection, groin guard, throat guard, full arm guards and knee and shin guards.
